President Vladimir Putin (Russia)
President Nursultan Nazarbayev (Kazakhstan)
Premier Dmitriy Medvedev (Russia)
Prime Minister Karim Masimov (Kazakhstan)
Political Issues
Russia: Controlled Human Rights- Since 1999, Russia has been controlled politically by Putin and Medvedev. In Putin's current presidency, he has continuously avoided democratization and increases restraints on his citizens. With this powerful duo, restrictions on freedom of assembly and other rights have been tightened.
Kazakhstan: There are not currently any large political issues in Kazakhstan. However, President Nazarbayev has failed to set up a system to establish a new president in the event that he can no longer fulfill his duties. In the event where Nazarbayev looses the presidency (i.e. succession, death), the position will likely be filled by the people in power under Nazarbayev and not through popular election.
Elections
Russia: elections are held by popular vote every six years with the eligibility for a second-term election. In the event that the President can not fulfill his duties to his country, the Premier will take over as President for a three month period. In those three months, an election must be held and a new President elected.
Kazakhstan: elections are held by popular vote every five years with the eligibility for a second consecutive term election. President Nazarbayev has been titled as the First President of Kazakhstan and has been granted an unlimited number of terms.
